the weigh in

yesterday we had the weigh in, the annual media spectacle when the weight of each member of the boat race is measured against his opposite man.  This feels something like a meat market, where I am the cow.  Before the weigh in, everybody "drinks up",  slamming as much water as possible to weigh as much as possible.  I weighed in at a whopping 97.2 kilograms, which is about 214 pounds!  This is the most I have ever weighed in my life by about 7 pounds.  I was proud.  The only person not to drink up was Rob Weitemeyer, who, realising that it was impossible to out-weigh his opposite man, tried to under-weigh his opposite man by as much as possible.  He managed to get under 80 kg, while his opposite man was about the same weight as me, it was pretty funny.
In the end, Oxford outweighed us by about 7 pounds a man, not including the coxswains, setting the record for the heaviest boat race crew in history.  Bizarrely, they were completely morbid and silent through the whole ridiculous affair.  We, on the other hand, boisterously embraced the ridiculousness of the event.  This follows a pattern through the past few weeks.  Oxford have taken everything grimly, whereas we have had fun.  I think these pictures show this:

  1. Where's your smile on the scale? Rob's setting the example there :) You have to play it easy with the media; give them smiles to print and stories to write. How much did the coxswains differ by?

  3. the coxswains were both under 55kg, so its irrelevant. However, Groshond looked half starved at 54.8 kg, so he seems to be working hard to be down there.
