To fill you in: Im down in San Diego at the moment, training in the pair with Tom Peszek. Trials are middle/early June, and I feel optimistic about our chances. I spent the winter and early spring training in Oakland with the 8s group, which didn't pan out for me, although it was a near thing.
The best (and perhaps only nice) part about rowing the pair is the freedom it gives you. You are dependent on only one person besides yourself, and accordingly you can pick your coach, your regimen, your boat, your schedule. If you (purely hypothetically) want to train in San Diego for a few weeks and hang out with your girlfriend and enjoy* the beach, you can!
* this enjoyment is purely hypothetical as well. It is common knowledge that rowers are incapable of enjoying anything except suffering¥
¥ Other notable things rowers are incapable of: 1. making layups in basketball, 2. responding to an assertion that they can't do something with "yeah, you're probably right"
