So many exciting things happened today! It snowed! For real! Its not supposed to snow here very much, but we got like 3mm of snow! Awesome! This picture doesnt do our precious 3mm of glorious snow justice. Me and Hardy (the only person on the team not from a cold part of the world, from Brisbane) got really giddy and jumped around on the dock, throwing miniature snowballs at people before practice started. I was REALLY excited, despite sarcastic comments from all the jaded Brits who figured I had never seen snow before. (I'm convinced they were excited too, but its very unBritish to get excited about piddly things like snow). It was all so much fun, until I realized that we actually have to row in the weather. crap.
Cold. Seriously, I'm not sure I knew the meaning of the word before today. The snow quickly turned into hail, which quickly turned into sleet, which quickly turned into icy rain. My boat was rowing like total crap, and we were getting doored by the other boat on every piece. This is pretty miserable in any circumstance, but is especially awful in rotten weather. Did I mention that is was cold? Well, it was. really cold. We somehow managed to survive, to find that second session had been cancelled. But by the end of practice all of our lovely snow had been melted! booo!
In other news, we found a dead rat in our boathouse! I thought my teammates just smelled bad! I also bought a turkey today for Thanksgiving. Woohoo! I think like 20 people or so are going to crowd into my house on thanksgiving (or rather the day after thanksgiving). I am bummed that Stanford lost to Cal yesterday, especially after the wonderful upset(s) of last year, but it sounds like it was a positive season overall. I didnt get a chance to see the game, so you will have to tell me if this is true.

Coxswain Giles with our furry dead friend, any resemblance?
I hope you have enough food for the Thanksgiving meal...rowers eat about 1.5x the amount that normal people do--you'll probably need three turkeys ;)
ReplyDeletefirst picture reminds me of wizard's staff...please tell me you've brought that to the brits?
